Supreme Court summons Tamil Nadu Home Secretary

I am glad to see this news item in The Hindu today on the summoning of Tamil Nadu’s Home Secretary by the Supreme Court on a road safety petition. Apparently, the Secretary was so busy that he could not file an affidavit on what has been done to improve conditions in the State. This is a fit occasion for the State Government to set its house in order. But will it?

Tamil Nadu has, according to the statistics quoted from the National Crime Records Bureau by petitioner Prashant Bhushan of Common Cause, the worst road safety record in the country.
