Beware this deceptive invitation

The Nigerian email scams are well documented and so are the several variants. The sob stories about some African leader leaving a fortune for his widow who has found you to share the booty, if only you can help her transfer it out of the country, are passe.

Today, I received a forwarded mail from the web administrator of a major news website which goes as follows:

Dear Friend,
My name is Sidney Cole, working with (WORLD YOUTH ORGANIZATION FOR  HUMAN WELFARE) California, U.S.A. We are organizing a global youths combined conferences taking place from January 23rd-25th 2008 at California in the United States and in, Cotonou Benin from January 27th-30th 2008. In our request to invite people from various countries around the world,
If you are interested to participate and want to represent your country, you may contact the secretariat of the organizing committee for details and information.

I believe that we may have the opportunity to meet if you may be willing to participate in this event. You can also inform youths & NGOs in your country about these conferences. The benevolent donors of the Organizing Committee will provide round trip air tickets and accommodation for the period of participants? Stay in the U.S., to all registered participants. You will only be responsible for your own hotel booking in Benin where the second phase of the conference will be held.

If you are a holder of an international passport that may require visa to enter the United States you may inform the conference secretariat at the time of registration, as the organizing committee is responsible for  all visa arrangements and travel assistances. Below is the contact address of the conference secretariat:
by Email:

Sidney. Cole

Obviously, this is a fake invitation meant to lure the gullible into transferring some dollars, possibly using money transfer codes, in the hope that they can visit the US. How does one come to such a conclusion?

Today no international conference of this kind functions without a website and a physical address. The programme is explained in detail, with venue and list of confirmed speakers in such announcements. The conference secretariat has full information on where it is located and what its coordinates are. Moreover, no one can offer to help with a US visa. So beware! And Gmail should cancel the email ID of this scamster.
